Vanguard International Film Festival believes the only thing a film owes anyone is honesty of intent and command of craft. We accept every genre, every style, every budget level, and every point of view — including the ones we disagree with. Animation next to documentary, AI-assisted work next to hand-made frames, a studio commercial next to a first-time student short: at Vanguard, they compete on one thing only — whether the work moves us. Narrative features, documentaries, animation, AI cinema, character films, commercial and branded work — all judged side by side, by the same jury, with the same criteria. A studio-backed spot holds no advantage over a student debut, and no penalty either.
We built Vanguard IFF in Los Angeles deliberately: in the city where the industry defines what film "should" be, we host the festival that refuses to. The competition is the argument.
Vanguard IFF runs on a quarterly cycle. We judge and announce winners once every three months — four editions a year — so you can submit when your film is ready rather than waiting on a single annual deadline. Each cycle also crowns our signature prize, the Vanguard Spirit Award, given to the one film that best embodies what this festival was founded for.
We don't ask what your film is for. We ask whether it means it.
